What free HTML/web design program is the best for entry level web designers?

Stephen D asked the question:

I’m a college student who is trying to make a professional level website for my student organization. I usually use Dreamweaver, but that has recently been removed from my computer. I’m on a tight budget, and want to use a program that doesn’t require too much HTML software. Is there anything like this that exists? (I don’t want to make a 6th grade level Geocities pagemaker site either) Thank you!

    I use notepad for HTML.

Notepad comes free with Windows, and is the only tool that any HTML developer really needs - a plain text editor. Something with syntax highlighting can be useful though, such as HTMLKit. Avoid WYSIWYG editors at all costs, the HTML they produce is verbose and messy.

Try NVU its free, it produces clean HTML and is nice to use.

    Have fun.. :)

most computers that come with the microsoft package gas frontpage with it… if you dont have the microsoft package you can always use notepad or wordpad. you have to be strong with html to go from there obviously because dreamweaver will help you with code but wordpad and notepad does not.

Yes, NVU is a good free open source program to use. If you don’t wish to use that, there are other free programs to use:
    Try here:

I use WeBuilder 2007 - it’s a fantastic program and very inexpensive to use. Best of all, you can also use it for editing HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, ASP, and Ruby within a single program. Check it out here:
